How did the band start?

Darren: I ran into Ben at the Hardback down in Chapel Hill. I was in a band, but I was just there seeing a band, I thought I'd get some food. He said he was moving to town so I helped him find a place and just showed him around.

Ben: I'm from Winston -Salem, North Carolina. I lived there until I went off to college. I went to the University of Miami. I had a really good scholarship... but I didn't have enough money to pay for the rest of it so I had to split. So I threw my drums into the lake. I got pictures of me throwing my drums in the lake. It was a $27 drum set.
Robert: I was in transit... I got back from Nashville and I get this message, this little piece of paper and it says "Ben Folds' called." I knew who Ben was and it scared the shit out of me because thought "Do I owe him money or something?" Then, I don't know, we just got together and played, We snuck into the UNG practice room. There was some angry Chinese women out there banging on the door the whole time and we sat up there and jammed.
So how long was after you guys got together that you started playing live?

Darren: About a month and a half...It went well actually. the first gigs went really good.

Robert: It was all right when we started that way, because you don't have to treat it like a recital or a showcase or something like that, like you might have to do in New York or L.A. where you are highly criticized, so it was really cool.
